Maintenance Dredging, Fraser River, Small Craft Harbours

The proposed works consist of annual dredging of five harbours (Kanaka Landing, McMillan Island Harbour, McIvor's Landing, Whonnock Harbour and Mission Harbour) using a combination of two dredging methods.  Either a small tugboat conducts dredging by propeller wash, or clamshell dredging is utilized in combination with propeller wash dredging.

The intent of the proposed works is to achieve a depth of -2.5m chart datum (CD) for Whonnock, McIvor's Landing, Kanaka Landing and Mission Small Craft Harbours.  The target depth for McMillan Island Harbour is -3.5m CD.  Completion of this maintenance dredging work will ensure that critical areas within the harbours are dredged to a depth which will ensure safe navigation for vessels and safe harbour operations to support commercial fisheries.

The dredging volume to achieve the harbour depth targets varies from year to year.  Total dredge volumes in the previous 5 years, for all five harbours, have ranged between 5,900 and 11,300 cubic metres.

December 18, 2020 – The Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours issued its Notice of Determination and determined that the project is not likely to cause significant environmental effects.
