Sumas IR6 Former Brick Plan Demolition and Remediation

The brickworks site is derelict and requires removal and remediation so that the site can be redeveloped for use by the Sumas IR6 community.  The first phase of the project is to remove all surface structures.  The second phase of the project will be contaminated soil remediation.  This application is for Phase 1 - removal of all surface structures, which includes some components that are identified as Hazardous Waste.  The site is approximately 1.6 hectares, mostly within IR6 with the remainder off-reserve.

Notice of determination

February 15, 2022 – Indigenous Services Canada has determined that the proposed Sumas Demolition Project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. 

The determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • Impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;
  • Indigenous knowledge;
  • Community knowledge;
  • Comments received from the public;
  • Mitigation measures.
