Drainage Maintenance and Improvement Project - Alaksen National Wildlife Area

Ducks Unlimited Canada is proposing to undertake maintenance and repair activities to improve drainage within the Alaksen National Wildlife Area. A network of ditches, dikes, culverts, and water control structures direct water from the National Wildlife Area to the Fraser River, which helps to mitigates the risk of flooding and improves wildlife habitat. Proper functioning of this drainage network is necessary to ensure the effective management of the area for wildlife, their habitats, agricultural fields, federal infrastructure, and public visitor access.

The scope of the project includes excavating approximately 9 km of ditches and the clearing (and potential replacement) of up to 28 existing water control structures and culverts. This excavation will be completed by excavator and by tree pruning and removal via chainsaw. If necessary, a vacuum truck will be used to clear blocked culverts.

The proposed work will be completed during the late summer, fall, and winter and during a period when disturbance to migratory birds and other wildlife will be minimal. Exposed soil and excavated material will be re-graded, stabilized and/or re-seeded using appropriate native plants, soils, seed mix and seed application at the completion of construction.
