YVR Pavement Deicer Storage Tank Expansion

The Vancouver Airport Authority is proposing to increase the storage capacity for pavement deicer at the Vancouver International Airport in Richmond, B.C. The proposed project will involve construction and operation of seven new aboveground tanks to store potassium acetate pavement deicer. The tanks will provide additional storage capacity in preparation for use with airfield pavement de-icing during winter operations. Two storage tanks will be installed at the Airfield Maintenance Storage building and five storage tanks will be located groundside, near the North Guard House with truck connection points to airside.  Each proposed storage tanks is 30,000 L in capacity providing 210,000 L of additional storage capacity. The total project footprint is approximately 2,200 sqm.

Scope of construction work are as follows:

AMS Building

  • Installation of two storage tanks;
  • Installation of a building canopy;
  • Installation of new salt storage shed;
  • Installation of drainage pipe;
  • Replacement corrosion damaged equipment and repair pf pipes throughout the AMS building;
  • Extension of concrete slab on grade and perimeter bollards.

Groundside Tank Farm

  • Installation of five storage tanks;
  • Installation of security fencing with access gate,
  • Installation of drainage pipe;
  • Installation of pipe routing from tanks to pump stations
  • Concrete slab with perimeter containment trench.

January 26, 2024 – The Vancouver Airport Authority intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, the Vancouver Airport Authority is inviting public comments until February 26, 2024 respecting that determination.
