Riparian Habitat Enhancement - Russ Baker Way Lands

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is managed by Vancouver Airport Authority, a community-based, not-for-profit organization. We strive to make YVR an airport that British Columbia can be proud of--and we do this, every day, through our commitment to excellence and our focus on serving passengers, partners and communities.

YVR is located in one of the largest estuaries on the west coast of North America, at the mouth of the Fraser River on Sea Island in Richmond, British Columbia. YVR has an Environmental Management Plan that outlines our environmental priorities, which are aligned with our mission and values. One of our commitments is to improve Ecosystem Health on Sea Island.

YVR is proud to be the first airport in the world to achieve Salmon-Safe certification. This certification acknowledges the ongoing efforts and commitment to transform land and water management practices to protect Fraser River water quality and enhance the habitat so Pacific salmon can continue to thrive.

Vancouver International Airport and Musqueam Indian Band are located in the same community on land that is Musqueam traditional territory. We share a 30-year agreement founded on friendship and respect to achieve a sustainable and mutually beneficial future for our community. The Musqueam Indian Band - YVR Airport Sustainability and Friendship Agreement is based on the four pillars of Sustainability—Social, Economic, Environment and Governance. We have partnered with Musqueam Habitat Aquatic Team to identify priority areas for riparian habitat enhancement.

The project aims to restore a 600 metre stretch of riparian habitat along the Middle Arm of the Fraser River. The scope of work includes removing invasive species within 20 metres of the top of the bank, planting native species that align with YVR's wildlife management program objectives, and the construction of a universally accessible multi-use pathway that is set back from the top of the bank. Through the restoration of this area, we will provide valuable habitat for fish and wildlife. This project aligns with YVR's environmental objectives and commitments made in the Environmental Management Plan, Salmon Safe Certification and the Musqueam Indian Band-YVR Airport Sustainability and Friendship Agreement.
