Sidney Spit Buoy Upgrades

There are two outcomes sought by this project. The first outcome seeks to increase the number of visitor mooring buoys at Sidney Spit from 14 to 21 in order to provide better quality visitor experience while also protecting critical eelgrass habitat. Buoys are attached by chains to 1m cubed cement gravity anchors set on the ocean floor). This project seeks to return the number of visitor mooring buoys to 21 by installing 4 additional anchors on the ocean floor and adding 7 new buoys to the existing mooring field.

The second portion of the project seeks to improve the existing closure at the Sidney Lagoon by adding regulatory signage and closure notices at the entrance and replacing one special purpose buoy. The Sidney Lagoon is classified as a Zone One- Special Preservation Area and has been closed to the public since 2008. This project seeks to replace one missing special purpose closure buoy at the entrance of the lagoon, and add additional signage to ensure visitors are informed of the lagoon closure.
