Installation of scour protection

The Proposed Project

Bosa Properties are proposing to conduct scour protection work at 660 Quayside Drive, New Westminster. This work forms part of Bosa Properties Pier West waterfront community development consisting of two high density residential towers, a three-story commercial building and approximately two acres of parkland, located on the adjacent upland site.

The works proposed within federal lands include installing in-water scour protection along an existing sheet pile wall. Scour protection in the form of 400mm rip rap will be placed for a total length of 250 meters from the west shoring wall, to 30 meters from the east end of the wall. The rip rap will extend 15 meters into the Fraser River and will be placed at a thickness of 1.2 meters for up to 8 meters from the sheet pile wall and decrease to a thickness of 0.8 millimetres for a further 7 meters towards the toe. Larger rock (500mm) will be used at the upstream end of the wall to accommodate accelerated currents in this area from the Fraser River. All work will be undertaken from a barge mounted crane and materials barge with rock being lowered through the water column using a clamshell bucket. No excavation is proposed for this work. Construction would take approximately one month to complete.

To help inform a determination on whether the proposed project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, and to assist the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority in making a decision on whether or not to approve the proposed project, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and Transport Canada are inviting comments from the public.
