Institute of Ocean Sciences Fuel Tank Replacement

DFO and CCG are proposing to replace the diesel fuel tanks at the Institute of Ocean Sciences (IOS). The IOS is a federally run specified major facility which is shared by the Science and Coast Guard Sectors. The existing fuel tanks are at their end of service and need to be replaced. The existing fuel tanks are used by CCG, and are currently too large. The replacement fuel tanks will be smaller in size to accommodate the amount of fuel CCG relies on.

This proposed project involves the removal of one 9000 L gasoline fuel tank and one 4550 L diesel fuel tank and associated piping, which have been drained. The project also involves the installation of one 2000 L diesel fuel tank and one 2000 L gasoline tank and associated piping. The new infrastructure will be placed in the exact footprint of the previous infrastructure.

Minimal ground disturbance will occur (1m2). While the majority of infrastructure is above-ground, it will be required to saw cut and remove a small section of concrete to install a new shut off valve in the oil-water separator discharge pipe.

There is road access leading to the tanks to allow vehicles to transport materials, mobilize and demobilize equipment.
