Rideau River Cableway Decommissioning

Environment and Climate Change Canada's (ECCC) Water Survey of Canada division, in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, maintains a network of hydrometric stations which record water level in lakes and rivers at close to 600 locations in Ontario. At the Water Survey of Canada hydrometric gauge on the Rideau River at Ottawa (02LA004), there is a cableway spanning the river. The cableway consists of:  a support structure (tower) on both river banks, with a looped cable strung between the structures, and a passengar cart. All components of the cableway are no longer required for taking hydrometric measurements at this site and ECCC is planning to decommission the entire cableway.

Only the cableway support structure (tower) on the south bank of the river is located on federal land - owned by the National Capital Commission - and located in Vincent Massey Park.   The north bank is University of Carlton land.  Federal land and federal funding is involved in this project, and the project is therefore subject to Section 82 of the Impact Assessment Act (IAA).
