Repair and development of the Île Sainte-Hélène Pavilion

Built between 1927 and 1931, the Île Sainte-Hélène Pavilion is an Art-Deco-style building located on Île Sainte-Hélène. With a total floor area of 7,145 m2, the pavilion has two basements, a ground floor, an upper floor, and a mezzanine. Its foundations were built into the side of the bedrock. The building is made of concrete slabs and walls, and a system of steel beams and columns. The pavilion roof is part of the deck of Section 5 of the Jacques Cartier Bridge.

A number of repair projects have helped preserve this more than 90-year-old building over the years. Today, the pavilion is showing signs of damage that requires new work.

The aim of this project is to prolong the pavilion's service life by 75 years while retaining the building's main function as the deck of a section of the bridge. The project will also include operational, aesthetic, architectural, historical and ecosystem aspects.

For this project, JCCBI will install electromechanical systems, underground retention basins, and hydrodynamic separators that will be connected to a sewer network. Structural work is also planned and includes repairing interior walls, replacing or demolishing the mezzanine slab, upgrading staircases in the towers, performing concrete repairs, and reconstructing some mosaic tiling. The project will also include a landscaping component.

Short and long-term traffic hindrances will be required for this pavilion work to be carried out. These traffic hindrances are required to give contractors the necessary space to set up temporary installations and maintain safe distances between workers, equipment, and bridge users during the work.
