Project involving repairs to the Bonaventure Expressway, the Clément Bridge, and the approaches to Île des Sours

Built between 1965 and 1967, the Bonaventure Expressway is reaching the end of its service life. The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) will be carrying out maintenance and repair work on a 1.1-kilometre section of the expressway starting at about 100 metres northeast of the Clément Bridge and ending at the Hwy. 15 access ramps on Île des Sœurs.

Inspections have revealed defects in different structures approaching the Clément Bridge and in the road surface on Île des Sœurs. These inspections have also revealed defects in drainage structures and other road components. It has been determined that maintenance and repair work is necessary for the long-term durability of this infrastructure. The project therefore aims to correct a series of defects and increase road safety through different types of repair work on this section of the Bonaventure Expressway.

The work mainly includes but is not limited to:

  • Repairs to the Clément Bridge.
  • Full repairs to the road surface of the Clément Bridge, on the lanes of the southern approach to the Clément Bridge, and on the access ramp from Clément Bridge to Hwy. 15 southbound  (+- 1100 linear metres).
  • Repair of two viaducts at the southern approach to Île des Sœurs.
  • Repair of a superstructure.
  • Replacement of drainage systems.
  • Repair and replacement of street lights and modifications to the electricity system for the installation of LED light fixtures.

This work will take place during summer 2024 and summer 2025.

The nature of the work will cause traffic hindrances on the Clément Bridge, with traffic limited to one lane in each direction.

The project includes a series of environmental measures in particular to protect the population of cliff swallows that nest under the Clément Bridge deck.

This maintenance and repair program is part of JCCBI's mission to help users get where they need to go and ensure the safety and longevity of our infrastructure by applying systemic management based on a sustainable development approach.
