Rehabilitation of the Gate Lodge - Ottawa, ON

The Gate Lodge, constructed in 1868, is a Recognized Federal Heritage building situated next to the Rideau Hall Main Gate. The Gate Lodge served a functional purpose as a lodge for the gatekeeper, then as a guardhouse. More recently the building was used as a residence and in 2003 it was renovated for use as administrative space.

In recent years, several building components were identified as being at the end of their life cycle. The National Capital Commission (NCC) proposes to rehabilitate the building and improve the energy efficiency while making the ground floor universally accessible.

The NCC proposes to undertake the following scope of work:

  • Strip paint from building exterior and repair masonry;
  • Abatement of interior and exterior finishes;
  • Rehabilitate windows;
  • Repair foundation, as needed;
  • Replace roof and rebuild chimney;
  • Upgrade HVAC equipment;
  • New accessible washroom and interior floor layout;
  • Install new accessible walkway at entrance;
  • Landscaping to suit new walkway and improve surface drainage; and,
  • Utilities upgrades.

The proposed project would take place on lands owned by the NCC, and will be subject to a federal land use, design, and real estate transaction approval under the National Capital Act. The NCC will make an environmental determination under the Impact Assessment Act.

Select pruning and tree removals may be conducted to enable proposed project activities. Construction is anticipated to occur from spring 2024 to spring 2026.
