Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Cask Facility Project

In support of ongoing operations at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), the construction of a Cask Facility is proposed at the Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL), Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) site.  The Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) site is owned by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), a Federal Authority under the Impact Assessment Act 2019 (IAA 2019).  Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Ltd is responsible for the management and operations of AECL's sites, including the CRL site, pursuant to a long-term contractual arrangement.

The new facility will provide a centralized location for activities associated with the shipment, receipt and maintenance of casks.   The proposed site for the facility is located on approximately 1.5 ha of previously disturbed land.  The physical activities associated with the construction of the facility will include a geotechnical characterization, minimal clearing of vegetation and tie-in of existing utility services.  All these physical activities will be conducted in accordance with CNL's Environmental Policy and applicable legislation.
