Partial channelization of Ruisseau 1 at the Contrecoeur Marine Terminal, Port of Montreal

MPA aims to completely separate the runoff water from the Contrecoeur bulk terminal from that which comes from the upstream watershed, and which passes through Ruisseau 1 before joining the St. Lawrence River. This sector is used for transshipment purposes, and surface runoff flows towards Ruisseau 1. It is in the context of improving the surface water quality of Ruisseau 1 that the channeling of part of this stream is proposed.

The work consists of channeling a portion of stream 1 over a length of 200 meters. The pipe will have a diameter of 900 mm and will be made of high density polyethylene (HDPE). The pipe has been designed to provide protection equivalent to a rainfall recurrence of 1 in 25 years, including the increase in rainfall intensity established at 18% due to climate change. The chosen material is highly resilient and is recognized for its durability and longevity.

During the construction phase, which should last approximately two weeks, a negligible volume of soil will have to be excavated, piled up for characterization and disposed of. Excess soil generated by the installation of the pipe will be used mainly for filling and reprofiling purposes in the work area. This will reduce transportation by truck to an authorized site to receive the soil.

The work will be carried out dry when the area is completely exposed during low water periods. If the work must be carried out in water, it will be carried out dry using cofferdams or within a confined area according to the directives of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). They will be carried out from downstream to upstream.

In the event of heavy rain, work will be stopped. A protection system, such as a sediment barrier, sediment bag, temporary sedimentation basin, or others, will be provided, always with the aim of avoiding any sediment entering the Ruisseau 1. Also, as a preventative measure, a sediment barrier is planned in the stream bed downstream of the work.

The completion of the work includes excavation work, installation of the pipe, installation of a ballast system, backfilling and connection to the existing culvert. 12-wheel trucks, an excavator, loaders and lifting equipment will be necessary to carry out the work. Machinery, such as roller compactor and grader, will be necessary to repair the pavement (± 25 m).
