Application of RipRap for Shoreline Stabilization - Tower Island, Big Rideau Lake, ON

The owners of Tower Island in Big Rideau Lake propose to apply riprap to protect two existing sections of deteriorated shoreline wall, which surround most of the island. Rocks in the size range of 25-45 cm would be placed on a 2.5 : 1 slope. The proposal is to place riprap in front of the existing vertical walls, which will encroach onto the bed of the Rideau Canal (below the high water mark) up to 115 m2. This total will comprise two different areas of placement:

• 35 linear meters of rip rap (53 m2 of encroachment) in front of the existing concrete wall, at a maximum distance of 1.5 m from base of wall.

• 41 linear meters of rip rap would be placed in front of the existing stone & mortar wall (62 m2 of encroachment), at a maximum distance of 1.5 m from base of wall.

As part of the impact assessment process, potential implications to fish habitat and underwater cultural resources will be ascertained.

December 24, 2023 – The public comment period on the project is closed. Parks Canada is considering comments received to help inform its determination on whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
