MTO Culvert Replacement, Highway 15

The existing culvert was originally constructed in 1957 and is in poor condition with spalls, exposed rebar, and wide cracks. The existing culvert is 5.5 m wide by 1.8 m high, and is a combination of concrete open footing culvert and concrete box culvert. The proposed replacement consists of a 6 m x 2.5 m cast-in-place concrete open footing culvert supported on steel H-piles, on the existing alignment. The culvert will include cast-in-place concrete wingwalls

supported on steel H-piles. The proposed culvert has adequate capacity to convey the 25-year design storm and check flood without overtopping the roadway. During the replacement, the flow will be maintained through a temporary bypass pipe. The work has been divided into two phases: Phase 1 in Fall 2019 involves installation of the bypass system, and Phase 2 in 2020 involves the culvert replacement. The work has been classified as a Group C project under the MTO Class EA in which an Environmental Screening Document has been prepared. This provincial level EA will be evaluated against federal requirements and any gaps will be filled within the BIA.
