Tree Removal, Phase 2 - Canadian Forces Detachment Mountain View

The Department of National Defence (DND) has proposed a project to remove trees from Canadian Forces Detachment (CFD) Mountain View. There are approximately 41 acres of trees located in the runway approach and transition areas at CFD Mountain View which have not been maintained, and now exceed the height limits restriction for flight safety. A 2013 Lidar survey identified areas of trees requiring removal in dense patches and selective areas. That survey concluded that 5,217 trees in total will need to be removed within the CFD Mountain View flight area. These trees will be divided into sections, which will be defined as either "Clear Cut" or "Selective Clear Cut". Clear cutting will be the assumed approach for this project, unless the identified trees are within limited access locations where equipment cannot gain access (such as swamps). In this case, selective clear cutting will be used. Trees will be either grinded, chipped, or removed off site. Access roads may need to be constructed to access sections of the property. These will be constructed as required. It is noted that some of these trees fall outside of DND property. Also noted during initial review is that there are Species at Risk (SAR) present within the Mountain View property.
