Creation of an Irrigation Pond to Support Organic Vegetable Grower

A tenant of the National Capital Commission is planning to dig a small irrigation pond of approximately 40 feet by 40 feet on leased farmland in the National Capital Greenbelt. This pond will reach 15 feet at its maximum depth and will be used to support a transition to organic vegetable cultivation, which requires a steady supply of water.  The pond will be self-contained on private leased land and does not outlet into any watercourses. As is consistent with agricultural irrigation of this scale, it is not fenced.

The pond water will be used for agricultural activities, including the irrigation of vegetable crops. The project is expected to contribute to the long-term productivity of NCC farmlands and help support the increased cultivation of sustainable, local fruits and vegetables. As such, the NCC is supportive of this work.

The project is expected to start in mid-June, pending approval. Construction is expected to last less than one month.

The project is located in the eastern end of the National Capital Greenbelt, at 2811 Ramsayville Road. The pond will be situated near the active farmland, set back approximately 100 meters from the road. Lands to the north and south are used for agricultural production.
