Cleaning the Saint-Ours dam intake tunnel

Parks Canada is responsible for regulating the water level of the Richelieu River to ensure navigation, water supply, bank protection and public safety in the event of flooding. This is achieved by means of gates in the Saint-Ours dam sector, which are operated by water pressure from the inlet tunnel. Since 2007, however, contaminated sediment has accumulated in the intake tunnel, putting the dam's gates at risk. The Québec Waterways unit therefore wishes to carry out clean-up work, removing the sediment and ensuring its management, since critical habitat for the copper redhorse (a species at risk) has been identified just downstream of the dam.

October 8, 2023 – The public comment period on the project is closed. Parks Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada are considering comments received to help inform its determination on whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
