Gulf Shore Parkway East Road Renovations and Bank Stabilization

The Gulf Shore Parkway East (running east-west between Dalvay Gate and Brackley Gate) experienced significant damage following the impacts of Hurricane Fiona. This project aims to renovate the existing roadbed and provide embankment protection to prevent future loss of the roadway. Bank stabilization work is proposed at three locations: Dalvay Corner, Stanhope, and Covehead Bridge. Embankment protection will be achieved utilizing hydraulic rip rap (armour stone) to protect against erosion for a planned 10-year period. The project will see the addition of an estimated 175m2 of new armouring at Stanhope, 5000m2 of new armouring at Dalvay, and 500m2 of new armouring at Covehead Bridge southeast corner. Existing armour stone will be reinforced at Covehead Bridge, totaling an area of approximately 1200m2. The distance from the road edge to the top of the armoured embankment ranges from 0-20m; an armour stone key will be buried at a depth of approximately 1.5m by 5m width for the entire length at all sites. Work will be completed from the paved highway where possible, equipment access to the beach may be needed at some locations for installation. This project will occur within designated critical habitat for Piping Plover and SARA permitting will be required.
