Breakwater Reconstruction at Baileys Brook Small Craft Harbour, Pictou County, NS

The proposed project at Baileys Brook SCH in Pictou County, NS involves two components of work including the supply and placement of armour stone at the northeastern breakwater and removal of existing dredge material from the on-site containment cell, including transporting of material to an off-site disposal facility, located approximately 800 m east of the harbour, across highway 245. The existing breakwater has become damaged from recent storms and requires repairs. The purpose for removing existing dredge material from the on-site containment cell is to make room to accommodate material generated from the next maintenance dredge cycle planned for spring of 2024.

The purpose of the placement of the armour stone is to increase the existing crest elevation from an approximate elevation of +5.00m to +6.60m above chart datum to reduce wave over topping and provide additional protection to the harbour facility.  As part of the design, the existing breakwater will be widened on the landside to stabilize the new crest elevation.  Minimal rock placement will be completed at the seaward face of the existing breakwater down to the high-water mark to complete repairs to the damaged structure.

The work will involve the use of heavy equipment such as haul trucks and excavators operating from the landward side of the breakwater.
