New Wastewater Treatment Plant Outfall Pipeline - Sydney, NS
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
The proposed project will involve minor dredging of loose silt in the exact location where the outfall will be placed, followed by the placement of the prefabricated outfall pipe on the harbour bottom. The outfall pipe measures 600mm and will be covered with armor stone for protection. The project area will expand over 300 square meters. The treated effluent that will be discharged through this outfall pipe will eliminate three untreated raw sewages that currently discharges into the harbour via three existing outfalls.

2022-11-15 – Transport Canada has determined that the proposed project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:
- impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;
- Indigenous knowledge;
- community knowledge;
- comments received from the public; and
- technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.
Transport Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
Therefore, Transport Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
