Beare Wetlands Berm Repair

A study completed in 2022 assessed the stability of five berms at Beare Wetlands in Rouge National Urban Park and determined that the berms are in poor condition. Parks Canada will follow the preliminary recommendations for remedial works outlined in the study to improve berm stability in flow conditions and ensure water levels in the wetland are retained at current elevations. Water level differential upstream and downstream of berms 1, 2 and 4 is approximately 0.3 metres each. Head differential is not large, and seepage through these berms was not noted. A light construction approach will be implemented, which consists of installation of rip rap spillways on each berm. Water level differential of berm 3 is approximately 1 meter. Given the larger water level differential and previous observations of seepage, more extensive remedial works will be implemented, and the berm will be replaced. Berm 5 is not retaining water and may no longer be necessary. It will be left in place in its current condition to avoid unnecessary disturbance. Berms will be accessed from the south side of the wetlands. Depending on water conditions, a coffer dam may be installed upstream to isolate the work area with flow pumped downstream from the location. For berms 1, 2 and 4, shrubs will be removed from the middle of each berm and rip rap will be pressed in to create a spillway at a similar elevation to the existing eroded gullies. Berm 3 will be completely removed, and a new berm will be constructed and keyed into inorganic soil using select compacted fill with high clay content. A rip rap spillway will be installed on the new berm at the desired wetland water elevation. All disturbed areas will be restored using a native seed mix, cover crop and fully biodegradable jute/coir mat as needed.
