Newman Sound Day Use Area, HV cable replacement

The existing underground high voltage cable that provides electrical power to the Newman Sound Day Use Area (NSDUA) is compromised and is unreliable for providing consistent power to park facilities including the Outdoor Theatre, the Campfire Performance Stage, two kitchen shelters, and a washroom facility. Replacement of the existing cable with a new HV cable along the existing footprint area (~355 m trench) is required. The terrestrial biological environment within the project limits is typical of most biological environments in Newfoundland with minimal disturbance. The terrestrial vegetation surrounding the proposed work location consists of conifer forest (primarily black spruce) with understory, ericaceous vegetation. Ground cover along the immediate footprint area where cable replacement is required is mostly rock, sand as part of an existing roadway and walking trail. Wildlife resources typically found in this environment include songbirds, spruce and ruffed grouse, red fox, snowshoe hare, red squirrel, black bear, and moose. Species at risk that could inhabit the surrounding areas include the Newfoundland marten (Martes americana atrata), Little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus), Northern myotis (Myotis septentrionalis), Boreal felt lichen (Erioderma pedicullatum), Blue felt Lichen (Degelia plumbea), Frosted glass-whiskers Lichen (Sclerophora peronella), and Red crossbill (Loxia curvirostra percna).
