Wharf removal at the Smithsville Fisheries and Oceans Canada Small Craft Harbour, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia

Fisheries and Oceans Canada – Small Craft Harbours (DFO-SCH) is proposing to remove the existing L-shaped wharf and naturalize the shoreline at a previously decommissioned Small Craft Harbour in Smithsville, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia. The main goal of this project is to address the safety concern created by the wharf in its current state of disrepair. The stem of the wharf is a timber pilework structure that extends approximately 37 meters into the harbour with a 6 m wide concrete deck, which leads to a 33 m long timber cribwork structure with a 6 m wide timber deck attached perpendicularly to the east end of the stem. The total footprint of the wharf is approximately 421 m2.

A temporary road will be installed within the approximate footprint of the wharf stem to facilitate the wharf removal. The road will be built to an elevation of +1.5 m above chart datum with a crest width of 2.8 m and 1:1 sloped sides. The boundaries of the road will extend approximately one meter beyond both sides of the existing wharf, resulting in a slight increase in footprint of approximately 70 m2. However, the road will only be in place for the duration of the wharf removal and removed upon completion. Salvaged rip rap from the project will be placed along the top edge of the existing slipway at the site to bridge a gap that has formed by the former wharf. Rip rap will be placed above the high water mark and will tie into the existing shoreline protection.
