Culvert Clearing

Elk Island National Park proposes to clear two culverts along its main thoroughfare. The culverts drain water from upstream wetlands across the road to downstream wetlands but beavers have blocked the culverts with mud and debris. Without flow through the culverts, there is a risk of water building up against and undermining the road, as well as potential for larger uncontrolled washouts. Because there is potential to move large amounts of water with unknown impacts to upstream and downstream wetlands, a Basic Impact Assessment will be used to assess project.
