Burgeo Wharf Reconstruction
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
DFO, Real Property Safety and Security intends to reconstruct and reinforce portions of an existing timber crib wharf located at the Canadian Coast Guard Lifeboat Station in Burgeo, NL. Existing fenders, chocks, ladders, wheelguard and associated blocking will be removed and replaced. Portions of the cribbing will also be repaired and portions of rip-rap scour protection and the existing rock mattress located at the base of the wharf will be replaced and enhanced. All proposed work is to occur within the existing footprint of the structure.
Latest update
January 7, 2025 – DFO-RPSS have issued their Notice of Determination after evaluation of the wharf repairs at the Burgeo SAR, and have determined that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects and can therefore proceed.
This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:
- Impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;
- Community and Indigenous knowledge;
- Comments received from the public; and
- Technically and economically feasible mitigation measures.
Mitigation measures taken into account for this determination are:
- To minimize the possibility of fish habitat contamination and the spread of aquatic invasive (alien) species, all construction equipment which will be immersed into the water or has the possibility of coming into contact with such water during the course of the work, must be cleaned and washed to ensure that they are free of marine growth and alien species.
- Construction material and debris are not to become waterborne. Do not dispose of any materials or waste into marine environment.
- Oil spill response equipment, such as adsorbents and open-ended barrels should be available on-site in case of a spill or leak. All spills or leaks must be promptly contained, cleaned up and reported to the 24-hour environmental emergencies report system (1-800-563-9089). The proponent should also be familiar with the on-site environmental emergency response plan which can be followed in case of a spill.
- Work should occur during daylight hours only and avoid the use of construction lighting wherever possible. If construction lighting is required, LED lights should be used instead of other light types where possible. The fewest number of site-illuminating lights that are necessary for the work should be used in the project.
- Ensure that waste is not left at the work site. All construction waste material will be disposed of in a provincially approved manner.
