Trail 8c Realignment

The Jasper National Park Visitor Experience and Assets Teams are proposing to realign trail 8c on the Pyramid Bench. The original trail was not sustainable as it was often located at the lowest point of the terrain and was further damaged by the Pyramid Bench Fire Hazard Reduction Project. Parks Canada Trail Specialists performed a site visit to design a sustainable trail route. The new route will utilize 279m of existing trail 8c segments and will require 2134m or new trail construction. This project as proposed, falls outside of the scope of the Land-Based Trails PRIA (2021). The PRIA does not apply to rerouting the trail such that the new alignment is more than 50 meters from the old trail center line or that the new trail's length is extended by more than 500 meters. The new proposed route for trail 8c is up to 175m from the original trail in some areas. Therefore, the BIA pathway is a more suitable level of assessment to determine if the project is likely to cause significant residual environmental effects.
