Coalspur Vista Coal Underground Mine and Expansion Activities Project

Coalspur Mines (Operations) Ltd. is proposing to expand the existing Vista Coal Mine Project, an open-pit surface coal mine for the extraction and export of thermal coal. As proposed, the Vista Underground Mine would be located within the Vista Coal Phase I mine permit area and is additional to the Phase II mine expansion which would extend westward from Phase I. The project is located approximately 10 kilometres east of Hinton, Alberta, at its western boundary.

July 30, 2020 — The Minister of Environment and Climate Change has determined that the Coalspur Vista Coal Underground Mine Project, as well as the Vista Coal Mine Phase II Expansion Project proposed by Coalspur Mines (Operations) Ltd. warrants designation under the Impact Assessment Act, and has issued an order. The reasons for the Minister’s determination are provided in the Minister’s response.
