Loon River First Nation: CU350 BF 78716 Bridge Replacement over Loon River

Loon River First Nation proposes to replace the existing BF 78716 bridge structure over the Loon River on its lands at Loon Lake IR 235. The project will include the construction of a new multi-span bridge structure with two pile sets installed below the normal high-water elevation of the Loon River, and riprap armored abutments on either side of the river. The new bridge will be located southwest of the existing structure in an area that is not presently developed, and features forest, shrubby flood zones, and riparian wetland. The existing multi-span structure will remain in use for the duration of construction activities to provide transportation of residents and construction equipment across the river. Improvements will be made to road approaches, local intersections, and parking areas to transition traffic from the existing bridge to the new bridge. Subsequently, the existing bridge will be decommissioned and removed from its current location.

This review is being conducted jointly with Transport Canada supported by the Navigation Protection Program. Supplemental review and permitting requirements are being sought from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Alberta Environment & Protected Areas.
