Old Massett Village Council - Hiellen Longhouse Village Expansion
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
The proposed Hiellen Longhouse Village Expasion Project will involve the clearing of land and construction of the following:
• Seven new cabins, some of which will be connected by an elevated walkway to the backside of other existing cabins. The elevated walkway will improve wheelchair accessibility and flow throughout the site, especially for groups split between separate cabins.
• Four or more new tent pads near North Beach with views of the ocean which will provide a new type of amenity and experience to the HLV.
• New washroom and shower building located behind the group longhouse, eliminating the need for portable toilets to accommodate large events.
• The septic tanks will be relocated to the northeast and reinstalled along with additional tanks to achieve the required storage and treatment capacity. A sewage lift station will be constructed next to the septic tanks in order to move the effluent to a new sand mounded septic field.
• Improved and more safe access to North Beach provided by an elevated walkway that departs from the cabins and meanders through the forest and above the wetlands. The walkway will make accessing the beach a better experience for guests and connect seamlessly with the new beachside tent pads and elevated walkway to the cabins.
• A new looped gravel roadway which will provide vehicle access to the front door of each of the new cabins for construction, operations and maintenance purposes. The plan will also require that improvements be made to the roadway that intersects the south end of the reserve in order to provide access to the proposed new sand mounded septic field.
• Gathering spaces and communal fire pits are included in the plan to create spaces for visitors to gather together through improving the existing shared spaces adjacent to the Longhouse and the central tent pads.
