Fairview Terminal Phase II Expansion Project – Public Invited to Comment the Draft Scoping Document and Attend Open Houses

OTTAWA – May 26, 2009 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency), invites the public to comment on the draft scoping document for the environmental assessment of the Fairview Terminal Phase II Expansion Project, in Prince Rupert Harbour, British Columbia.

The Agency prepared the scoping document on behalf of the responsible authorities, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Environment Canada, the Canadian Transportation Agency, as well as the Prince Rupert Port Authority, as a regulator for this project.

The scoping document incorporates the requirements of the federal environmental assessment process and identifies key issues to be addressed in the comprehensive study.

Public comments received by June 26, 2009, will be considered. All written submissions received will be considered public and will become part of the public registry. Interested persons or groups are invited to send their comments in the official language of their choice to:

OPEN HOUSES

The Agency also invites the public to attend open houses in the project area. The open houses will give the public an opportunity to learn more about the federal environmental assessment process and how they can participate. Federal government representatives will be making presentations and will answer questions.

The Prince Rupert Port Authority is proposing to expand its existing Fairview Container Terminal in Prince Rupert Harbour. This will include extending the existing wharf structure and expanding the on-shore terminal. As part of the project, the Canadian National Railway Company is proposing improvements to the associated rail infrastructure.

The project is subject to a comprehensive study environmental assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and under the Canadian Port Authority Environmental Assessment Regulations.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
