Boblo Island Ferry Dock Demolition
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
Project Summary
The Boblo Island Ferry Dock is located on Front Road in Amherstburg, Ontario. The dock is located on the east shore of the Amherstburg Channel (Detroit River), to the east of Boblo Island. Approximately 33 kilometers southwest of the City of Windsor. The ferry dock is managed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Its structure is primarily wood frame, 70 meters in length, and 4.6 meters in width. Recent site inspection has reviewed the dock and determined it to be a public safety, navigational, and maintenance concern. The dock's condition is stated as poor and, as suggested in a recent report, surpassed its useful life by a minimum of six years. The dock is recommended for demolition.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Real Property Ontario & Prairie Region, Technical Services is proposing to demolish the deteriorated Boblo Island ferry dock. The scope of work includes:
- Demolition and removal of all roof members, decking, structural members, steel docking platform, and timber piles;
- Installation of new railings at the pre-existing concrete.
Demolition work is anticipated to take place outside of the no in-water work window of April 1 to July 15. However, if deterioration conditions of the dock require, emergency demolition and removal of the dock or part thereof, may necessitate work be completed within the no in-water work window to maintain public safety and to prevent damage to property and the environment. In such an event, proper authorization will be obtained through the Department's Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program.
