I live in Grey County where proposal for building a deep geological repository near the eastern shore of Lake Huron eventually failed due to valid local concerns regarding transportation of radioactive materials through communities, and leakage/exposure. SON (Saugeen Ojibway Nation) eventually withdrew support. I see the same shortcomings in this project.
* Transportation of used nuclear fuel to the site is not included in the project description. Transportation risks and best practice must be included. Risks of accidental exposures need to be measured.
* Plans for insuring adequate health and safety measures for workers and for residents of local communities must be in place and there is not enough information provided on this. In addition, the lack in this remote area of local emergency services capable of adequate response is of great concern.
*The assertion of 'low risk' is not adequately substantiated.
*Management of potential future expansion is not addressed or included in the current impact assessment.
We ask that a comprehensive impact assessment be undertaken with adequate time frames for comments and a panel review. That the assessment include all aspects of this project: the transportation of materials to the site; a comprehensive approved risk management approach; clarity on the project's life cycle; evidence of the informed consent of the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation. And finally, an account of the embodied carbon emissions that will result from the construction and operation of this project.
