I have concerns about the burial of nuclear waste in northern Ontario. Fundamentally, I am not convinced there is any safe way to bury the waste and to leave it undisturbed. The earth is not just inert stone...it shifts, changes, has moisture and water permeating it, and there is no way to ensure it would remain intact and self-contained. Our scientists cannot guarantee anything long term. That aside, just the transportation of the waste such a great distance along an area with so many important lakes and waterways is dangerous. The amount of emissions for so much truck traffic needed to transport the waste continually negates the so-called "clean" nuclear energy. Why are we not investing in solar and wind on a larger scale?
