Request for Transparency and Full Documentation for Public Review Before Decision-Making Stages

I am writing to express my concern about the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s proposed transportation of the radioactive waste  to its selected site.  My concerns centre around:

1.  grossly inadequate review time for the the initial project description for a project which will have long lasting future repurcussions.  

2. a project description that leaves out important information specifically the exclusion of the transportation of nuclear fuel waste as part of the Impact Assessment which has for 20 years been communicated to the public as being an important part of this project. 

It is imperative that the long distance transportation of this dangerous material be included in the Project Review.

As is typical of the NWMO, there is too little information about project activities, including those project activities that pose radiological risk for the workers and for residents in the area and downstream from the project site.  There is not enough information about the Used Fuel Packaging Plant, how the wastes will be transferred into the underground and placed in the emplacement rooms, how the containers will be monitored after they are underground, and how they will be retrieved or repaired in the event of a container failing. 

Before this project can be considered further, a full accounting of project activities must be included and the NWMO must be transparent about these activities in the Project Description.

I am requesting that this project be the subject of a full impact assessment including a public hearing, and that the Impact Assessment Agency ensure that the public is able to participate in a meaningful way through each step of the process.
