Road Safety

Having lived in the north my entire life and having travelled Highway 11/17 countless times, I have grave concerns about the transport of nuclear waste on these highways.

Most recently, as of the last weekend of January, 3 residents of the north lost their lives in 1 accident involving a passenger vehicle and a transport truck.

My thoughts go to the number of transport-involved accidents this year alone on these highways, lives lost and the potential for a 'nuclear waste' spill as the result of this kind of accident.

Why is the decision being determined by the communities in the potential site area for the repository when every Canadian can be affected by their decision?

As well, I reviewed the potential route that the thousands of trucks will take in transporting this danger goods across Ontario and the possibility of disaster along the way.

It is my understanding that the assessment being conducted by the NWMO of this study is not considering the road safety ramifications of this plan.

So, bottomline, I am very concerned about the short and long term dangers of this proposed plan.

Thank you for the opportunity to express my concerns.
