The Green Coalition has the following concerns:
- There are no surefire and failsafe places or methods of storage of high/medium level radioactive waste. Over tens of thousands of years, the shifting of the earth's crust can introduce water, and even expose the waste to the surface.
The DGR must be designed such that the waste is packaged in a secure form free of the possibility of corrosion, including the possibility of vitrification, and can be easily recoverable in the case of leakage or other occurrences. The importance of this has been recently shown in the USA where a fire occurred in a canister deep underground.
- Transport of the waste over a distance of 1800 km to the DGR site entails risk, from crashes, leakage due to vibration, terrorism, and human error.
The NWMO project proposal must include transportation.
