I strongly support the implementation of the Deep Geological Repository for long term management of radioactive waste. As a society, we need to agree upon a place to put the waste we produce for generating our energy. Having this repository is also important for Canada as a nation to show the world we have what it takes to be responsible for the sustainability of our nuclear power. Completing the project with public safety concerns, environmental health, and socioeconomic health in mind will also be a huge success for Canada to achieve.
For project success to happen, it is important that this is done with informed and willing consent by the communities of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and Ignace. Engagement needs to happen frequently and meaningfully. Viewpoints from residents and experts need to be considered.
Canada needs this repository because a significant chunk of the electricity grid is powered by nuclear power. Having a DGR would ensure the grid can be powered without hazardous nuclear waste being improperly stored. Future growth of the grid is also expected to be met by nuclear energy which is a further argument for having a DGR.
