To whom it may concern,
I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed underground nuclear waste repository in Northwestern Ontario. This project raises serious concerns for our environment, our communities, and future generations.
Northwestern Ontario is defined by its freshwater resources, forests, and Indigenous lands—ecosystems that are not easily repaired if contamination were ever to occur. Although the project promises safety measures, no long-term containment system is risk-free. Nuclear waste remains hazardous for thousands of years, and a failure at any point in that timeline would be catastrophic for an area that has supported life, culture, and local economies for centuries.
In addition, the transportation of nuclear waste to the site creates its own significant risks. Moving radioactive materials across long distances increases the chance of accidents, spills, or exposure events, especially in regions with limited infrastructure or severe weather. Transport routes would pass through communities that have not consented to these risks, and emergency services across Northern Ontario are not equipped for incidents involving nuclear materials.
Finally, consultation with Indigenous rights-holders and local residents has been insufficient. Projects of this scale and consequence require genuine engagement and free, prior, and informed consent—not just technical assessments.
For these reasons, I urge the government to reconsider the project and explore safer, more transparent alternatives for nuclear waste management that do not place Northwestern Ontario’s people, lands, and waters in jeopardy.
Sincerely,
Lindsay Williams
