Boreal Trail Reconstruction

Due to multiple heavy snowstorms late in the winter of 2022, followed by excessive rain fall events in the late spring; infrastructure along the Boreal Trail in Riding Mountain National Park was severely damaged and requires replacement in order to ensure the health and safety of staff and visitors. Riding Mountain National Park is proposing to replace the existing infrastructure for this accessible trail established in the late 1980's, including two pedestrian bridges over Jackfish Creek, up to 4 smaller foot bridges along the trail, a viewing platform and a boardwalk through the fen. The majority of this infrastructure will be replaced within existing footprints and trail corridor to minimize disturbance. In addition, the trail tread will be repaired following the existing corridor using sustainable trail design principles, but it will be widened slightly in some places to meet Parks Canada's accessible trail design standards. Finally, a new viewing area will be installed at the trailhead close to where the former platform was. The existing rest areas along the trail will also have benches replaced with, exact locations still to be determined as part of the overall design and where necessary to meet accessibility guidelines for required rest areas in order to meet accessible trail standards. Construction on the trail tread repairs and trailhead access will commence sometime this fall and throughout the winter. The entire project is expected to be completed Spring of 2024.

Latest update

May 23, 2023 – Parks Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Parks Canada is inviting public comments until June 22, 2023 respecting that determination.
