Maintenance Dredging - Winvan Paving

The proposed project

Mainland Construction Materials proposes to complete routine maintenance dredging of its Winvan Paving barge berth to re-establish required depths to prevent barges from grounding. Similar maintenance dredging was most recently completed in 2015. An area of approximately 870 square meters will be dredged, with approximately 1,300 cubic meters of sediment to be removed and a target depth of -4.6 meters chart datum. Dredging is anticipated to occur twice a year, depending on freshet conditions, within the Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) least-risk window for the Project area.

In years where infill is minimal and concentrated near shore, sediment will be removed using a long reach excavator parked up land. The dredged materials will be dewatered and reused. In years where infill is significant along the bulk of the berth, sediment will be removed using a clamshell bucket dredge rig, and a barge. In this circumstance, sediment will be tested and likely disposed of at sea.
