Metro Vancouver Maple Ridge Forcemain Scour Protection

The proposed project

Metro Vancouver proposes to install new scour protection in an emerging scour hole in the Fraser River to protect its forcemain from continued scour. The proposed works include the extension of an existing blended rock apron located approximately 400 metres downstream of Barnston Island. The rock apron will extend approximately 26 metres upstream and downstream (52 metres in total) from the alignment of the pipe and 35 metres south towards the shoreline. The proposed blended rock apron will be 2 metres thick, with 4H:1V slope edges. Excavation of approximately 2,470 cubic metres is required to have the apron embedded into the existing riverbed.

The total surface area of the apron will be approximately 7,120 square metres requiring 9,930 cubic metres of blended rock. Construction of the apron will include placement of the blended rock using an excavator equipped with a clamshell bucket working from a barge. The work will require two days for mobilization, one day for de-mobilization, and 20 days for in-water works. The project is anticipated to start between November 2022 and January 2023.
