Nulehtunan Sitomok - Repairing Our Shore

The Proposed Project:

The surface water runoff into Indian Brook has significantly increased with drastic increases in the peak flows over the past decade. Erosion along Indian Brook combined with a depositional delta at the mouth of the outlet into the Wolastoq (Saint John River) have impacted the Oromocto First Nation community's use, and connection to, Indian Brook. Additionally, recent flooding events along the Wolastoq have damaged the shoreline and put at risk the community's Powwow grounds and available space for other development opportunities.

Four (4) main areas of concern along Indian Brook and the Wolastoq were identified by community members and through on-site surveys. Through the planning phase, each area was assessed to determine the current conditions of the area and recommendations have been made for improvements to each area. Therefore, the scope of work in each area will involve:

Area 2 - the installation of culvert upgrades and further bank armoring with riprap at the outlet of twin culverts at Waasis Road;

Area 3 – the installation of a small bridge and gravel for a pedestrian trail from the Community Centre to the waterfalls in Indian Brook;

Area 4 – the backfilling and culvert replacement at a former railway crossing with an under-performing culvert;

Area 5 – the infilling to a minimum elevation of seven (7) meters and the construction of a new boat launch at the Powwow Grounds, which is situated along the Wolastoq. These works will also include excavation, soil restoration, sediment and erosion control, and temporary water control during construction. It is anticipated that these measures will re-stabilize the bank and be in place for the foreseeable future.
