Watercourse Crossing : Lawfield at Queens, Canadian Forces Base Gagetown

CBCL Limited was contracted by Defence Construction Canada in July 2018 to design upgrades for the replacement three (3) watercourse crossings within the 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown (5 CDSB) Range and Training Area in Oromocto, New Brunswick. The watercourse crossing on Lawfield Road at Otnabog Stream requires replacement as military activities upstream and high water flow have resulted in erosion and structural damage around the inlet and outlets. Additionally, the interior of the steel arch, installed over 35 years ago, has deteriorated at normal flow levels and is at risk of failure. The crossing on Lawfield Road at Queens Brook requires upgrades as two metal pipe arches were washed out during a rainfall event in September 2015. Finally, the watercourse crossing on Corner Road at Sharpes Brook has a concrete pipe complete with baffles, which do not function according to design specifications and requirements for fish passage under the Canadian Fisheries Act (1985). High water flow events have resulted in severe erosion around the outlet downstream of the crossing. CBCL has since performed surveys of site conditions at existing watercourse crossings and designed upgraded culverts which will safely support a Maximum Military Load Class (MCL) of 150 metric tonnes, account for seasonal flows and 1:100 year storm events, allow passage of fish under low and high water conditions, and meet all provincial and federal legislative requirements.
