Wasagamack First Nation Leachate Management Upgrades (Engineered Wetlands) - 2021
The leachate collection system at the existing community landfill site is inoperable and has been overflowing into the environment. The intent of the project is to construct an engineered wetland incorporating phytoremediation with the use of native plants on previously disturbed lands (former borrow pit). Although the project in itself is a mitigation measure, reducing potential adverse effects from the leachate, specific mitigation measures and residual effects have been addressed. Aski will develop a detailed design of the engineered wetlands area in association with Native Plant Solutions (plant specialist consultant). Construction of the wetlands, approximately 1.5 hectares in area, will include earthwork (cut/fill procedures) along the base of the former borrow pit and drainage area, berm construction along the south limit, realignment of existing drainage with flow controls, enhancement of native species vegetation (cattails or Typha latifolia) for wetland establishment, followed by monitoring.
