TSW Water Soldier Herbicide Control 2020

This project does not require posting on the IAA Registry as it is not a physical activity in relation to a physical work and therefore does not meet the definition of a project pursuant to the IAA. However, in accordance with PCA policy, physical activities of this nature require an Environmental Impact Assessment. With this, this project shall be assessed via a Basic Impact Assessment (BIA).

Parks Canada Agency's (PCA) Environmental Services group within Ontario Waterways is presently facilitating the management of the aquatic invasive species file for Water Soldier (Stratiotes aloides) (WS) on the Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW). This project will support work to control WS through mechanical removal and herbicide control for 2020 - 2023 in the TSW.

Based on 2019 monitoring, the WS infestation on the TSW is estimated to be approximately 90 hectares, with a treatment area of approximately 130 hectares. The most upstream populations occur in the Trent River, between County Road #30 and Healey Falls (Lock 17) in the Municipality of Trent Hills. Additional scattered populations of water soldier also exist below Healey Falls within Crowe Bay, Percy Reach and below Glen Ross.

Water soldier colonies reported during the 2020 summer field investigations on the TSW shall be targeted in the fall months (mid-September to mid-October) of 2020 to 2023 with Reward® aquatic herbicide.

This project shall be assessed with a BIA.
