I know there are a lot of people in the Elk Valley that are concerned over environmental impacts of the Teck coal mines, and the Castle Mountain expansion project. As it is well known, Fording River Operations is the largest metallurgical coal mine in Canada, second largest in the world.  They are also leaders in environmental research (advanced water treatment facility, saturated rock water treatment, extensive reclamation with appropriate flora to do the job, animal conservation, and extended and ongoing research in all such matters). It is an evolving process and I am proud to work at such a place.

That coal mine expansion will keep thousands of employees, contractors, hospitality workers, stores and shops open in the Elk Valley for many years to come. Without it, a lot of the Elk Valley will suffer much more than they have during this covid pandemic, and the recession that will undoubtedly follow for years to come.

With no options of diversifying industry in the near future, what will Elk Valley do? We have seen what is happening in Alberta with the collapse of the energy sector. Will our government let yet another industry that GREATLY supports our province die without other options in place?

I am proud to work at Fording River.
