Y Camp Prescribed Fire 2020
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
Parks Canada Fire Management Team in Waterton Lakes National Park has proposed the implementation of a prescribed fire in the Y Camp (Wishbone) area of the Park. The ecological objective of the fire is to reverse the trend of aspen tree encroachment onto what was historically Fescue Grassland and to restore the mean fire interval of 5 years to the Fescue Grassland and Aspen Parkland Ecoregions of the Park. The Fescue Grassland provides critical habitat for a variety of species in and outside of the park. The burn unit is located on the east side of Lower Waterton Lake and Waterton River, just south of Highway 6 and encompasses an area of 1,170 ha. Fire operations would take place in the winter (pre-guard burning) and spring (main unit burning) of 2020 before leaf out. Execution of this burn would take place every 5 years thereafter under the same conditions to continue with the trend of the reduction of Aspen Parkland encroachment into the Fescue Grasslands Ecoregion.
