North Shore Extension Project (Saguenay – Sept-Îles Natural Gas Pipeline) – Public Comments Invited

OTTAWA, October 2, 2012 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency must determine whether a federal environmental assessment is required pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 for the proposed North Shore Extension Project (Saguenay – Sept-Îles Natural Gas Pipeline) in Quebec. To assist it in making its decision, the Agency is seeking comments from the public on the project and its potential effects on the environment.

Gaz Métro proposes to extend its current distribution network to supply Quebec’s North Shore region with natural gas. The project involves the construction of a pipeline of about 450 km in length between the cities of Saguenay (Jonquière) and Sept-Îles, via Baie-Comeau and Port-Cartier. In addition to the buried facilities, the project involves the construction of above-ground structures and modifications to existing utilities.

The Agency will post a decision stating whether a federal environmental assessment is required on its website.
